Welcome to AIPS (Mamzar) Senior HistoryThis a support page for senior history students of AIPS Mamzar. I hope you find it useful. Description of Course MaterialGrade 10The focus of Grade 10 history is to give students an overview of pivotal eras and events in establishing a relatively recent nation. An attempt will be made to apply the lessons and axioms learnt from the formation of the USA to the development of Dubai and the UAE. Term I begins with a self-study of the indigenous populations, a guided research project and examining initial contact with European settlers. Term II continues by looking at ancient american civilisations, and also examines the US Revolution (War of Independence), the Civil War along with electoral issues to coincide with the 35th UAE National Day and the first FNC elections. Term III deals with the settlement of outlying areas as well as some basic statistical skills. Term IV deals with the emergence of the USA as an industrial nation and consumer society and linking to parallel developments in Dubai. Grade 11The focus of Grade 11 history is to give students an overview of the first half of the 20th century European history and its critical impact on 20th century world history. Term I focuses on the causes and course of World War I. Term II focuses on the impact of World War I: reconstruction of Europe, Rise of Germany & USSR. Term III deals with the causes of World War II and the outset of the War. Term IV deals with the conclusion to the war and its impart on world history. Special attention will be given to the material and economic causes underlying developments in world history. Grade 12The focus of Grade 12 history is to give students an understanding of social, political and economic forces that have shaped the latter half of 20th century world history and that continue to shape our societies and communities. Term I focuses on the beginnings of the Cold War and the spread of Communism in Europe. Term II traces the spread of communism in the rest of the world. Term III deals with efforts to end the cold war and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Term IV deals with China and Globalisation. Curriculum Extension1. Independent Research ProgramAn independent research project is assigned in the first term to develop students' research skills and enable them to pursue an area of interest. The standard required of each grade level is raised so that student should be prepared to meet the requirements of 1st year university level research by grade 12. Initial efforts in tandem with the English department during 2005-2006 and 2004-2005 have now been extended to other areas. While some effort is made to co-ordinate these research projects to avoid clashes in deadlines, older students should be taught to manage their time sufficiently to cope with competing deadlines. This year, in collaboration with the IT department, senior students will be required to make a short Power Point presentation about their project using a laptop and LCD projector or submit their presentation on disk.
Use of Audio-Visual AidsSpecial emphasis is given to the use of technology and audio-visual media (i.e. original footage, documentaries, re-enactments, commercial films, interactive CD Roms, and Power Point presentations) because of its ability to “bring history to life” as well as portray complex historical issues succinctly and memorably. Some cautionary notes must be sounded about the use of commercial films: (i) only selected scenes from some of the films will be shown since not all of the material is recommendable for some age groups and this culture; and (ii) viewing is accompanied by detailed discussion and analysis and reinforced by worksheets. It is vital that each Grade 10 history classroom has a map of North and Central America and each Grade 11 & 12 classroom has a world map and, this year, a map of Europe.
